Authentic Mineral Character

Walls That Change Beautifully With the Light

Limewash creates a soft, matte surface with natural tonal variation that cannot be replicated by standard wall paint. Every finish is brushed by hand, allowing subtle movement and depth to develop as light travels across the room. In this Haworth, New Jersey powder room, the warm neutral limewash glows softly above the walnut wainscoting and marble counter.

The Finish

What Is Limewash Paint?

Limewash is a mineral-based decorative finish known for its soft, matte appearance and natural color movement. Unlike conventional wall paint, which is designed to create a consistent layer of color, limewash develops subtle variations in tone as it dries.

It is applied by hand with a specialty brush in cross-hatch or multidirectional strokes. Meoded Lime Wash can range from soft and understated to visibly mottled, depending on the color, surface preparation, technique and number of coats.

Limewash vs. Paint

What Is the Difference Between Limewash and Regular Paint?

Limewash

  • Soft, ultra-matte mineral finish
  • Natural tonal movement
  • Applied by hand with specialty brushes
  • Creates depth and architectural character
  • Best for clients who appreciate natural variation

Traditional Paint

  • Consistent color and sheen
  • Applied by brush, roller or spray
  • Easier isolated touch-ups
  • More washable finish options
  • Best when uniformity is the priority

Neither finish is automatically better. We recommend the right system based on the room, surface, lighting, maintenance expectations and desired appearance.

View Detailed Comparison
Appearance
Limewash: Soft, matte finish with natural movement and tonal variation.
Regular paint: Consistent, uniform color with a predictable flat, matte, eggshell or satin sheen.
Application
Limewash: Applied by hand with a specialty brush using cross-hatch or multidirectional strokes.
Regular paint: Typically applied with rollers, brushes or spray equipment for uniform coverage.
Visual depth
Limewash: Creates layered depth and subtle changes as light moves across the surface.
Regular paint: Produces a more even and consistent color across the wall.
Touch-ups
Limewash: Touch-ups may remain visible because the finish naturally varies across the surface.
Regular paint: Touch-ups may blend more easily when the same product, color and sheen are used.

Regular paint: Clean, consistent and versatile.

How We Work

Our Professional Limewash Application Process

  1. 01

    Consultation & Sample

Review the room, lighting, surface condition, color and desired amount of movement.

    Technical Notes

We begin by reviewing the room, lighting, existing surfaces and the amount of movement the client wants. Limewash colors can look different throughout the day, so we consider both natural and artificial light before finalizing the selection.

  2. 02

    Protection & Preparation

Protect surrounding surfaces, complete necessary repairs and prepare the substrate for the mineral finish.

    Technical Notes

Floors, furniture, trim, windows and adjacent surfaces are protected before work begins. We inspect the walls for cracks, dents, loose material, contamination, glossy paint and previous repairs that may affect absorption or appearance.

Surface defects are repaired, sanded and cleaned as needed. New drywall may require PVA primer. Previously painted glossy surfaces should be sanded and primed with an appropriate multipurpose primer before the limewash base-coat system is applied.

  3. 03

    Base-Coat System

Apply the appropriate primer and Meoded Lime Wash Base Coat system to create consistent absorption.

    Technical Notes

For interior drywall and previously painted surfaces, we apply Meoded Lime Wash Base Coat to create the properly prepared surface needed for consistent absorption and finish development. Meoded recommends two base coats for best results.

Allow the base coat to dry according to the product instructions before proceeding.

  4. 04

    Hand-Applied Limewash

Apply the limewash by brush in layered multidirectional strokes, allow proper drying and inspect the completed finish.

    Technical Notes

The first coat of Meoded Lime Wash is applied with a specialty limewash brush using cross-hatch or multidirectional strokes. We maintain a wet edge to prevent unintended dry lines and harsh transitions.

The first coat is allowed to dry for at least eight hours.

A second hand-applied coat builds the final color, movement and depth. The brush pattern and application pressure are adjusted according to the approved sample and desired level of variation.

A third coat may be considered when a softer or more uniform appearance is desired.

After the finish dries, we inspect the walls for balance, continuity and overall appearance. Interior limewash is generally left unsealed to preserve its natural matte character and breathability.

For selected high-traffic or moisture-prone areas, Meoded Stain Shield may be considered after the required drying period. Limewash is not waterproof and should not be used inside showers or other continuously wet areas.

Limewash changes significantly while drying. Wet areas appear darker and stronger, while the completed finish dries lighter and softer. Natural variation, brush movement and tonal changes are intentional characteristics of an authentic limewash finish.

Making the Choice

Is Limewash the Right Finish for Your Space?

Limewash is an excellent choice when you want walls with natural movement, depth and handcrafted character. It may not be the best choice when you want perfectly uniform color, frequent invisible touch-ups or a highly washable finish in a heavily used area.

During your consultation, we will explain the appearance, maintenance expectations and appropriate product system so you can decide before work begins.

Limewash may be right for you if:

  • You prefer natural variation over completely uniform color.
  • You want a soft, matte decorative finish.
  • You appreciate handcrafted surfaces.
  • You want your walls or ceilings to feel more architectural.
  • You are comfortable with the character of a mineral finish.

Traditional paint may be a better fit if:

  • You need a highly washable finish.
  • You expect frequent spot repairs or touch-ups.
  • You want completely uniform color.
  • The surface is exposed to direct water.
  • You prefer a standard eggshell, satin or gloss sheen.

Questions

Limewash Painting FAQs

Can limewash be applied over painted drywall?

Yes. Painted drywall must be clean, sound and properly prepared. Flat-painted surfaces may receive Meoded Lime Wash Base Coat, while glossy or higher-sheen surfaces generally require sanding and an appropriate multipurpose primer before the base coat.

How many coats of limewash are needed?

Most interior projects receive two coats of Meoded Lime Wash over the properly prepared base coat. A third coat may be used when a more uniform appearance is desired.

How long does limewash take to dry?

Meoded recommends allowing at least eight hours between limewash coats. Overall project time also depends on surface repairs, primers, base coats, temperature, humidity and the size of the space.

Can limewash be used in bathrooms?

Limewash can be used on bathroom walls outside direct shower and splash areas. It is not waterproof and should not be installed inside showers or in areas with continuous water exposure. An appropriate protective sealer may be considered for certain moisture-prone surfaces.

Does interior limewash need to be sealed?

Interior limewash is often left unsealed to preserve its natural matte appearance and breathability. In selected high-traffic or moisture-prone areas, an appropriate natural-look sealer may be considered after the required drying time.

Can limewash be touched up?

Limewash touch-ups can remain visible because the finish naturally contains movement and tonal variation. Depending on the location and age of the finish, recoating a larger wall section may provide a more balanced result.View More Questions
Does new drywall need primer before limewash?
Yes. New drywall should first receive an appropriate PVA primer to promote even absorption. The prepared drywall then receives the specified Meoded Lime Wash Base Coat before the limewash finish.
Can you limewash walls and ceilings?
Yes. Applying limewash to both walls and ceilings can create a soft, cohesive and immersive interior. Proper preparation and application planning are especially important on ceilings because natural and artificial light reveal surface variation.
Is every limewash wall identical?
No. Limewash is hand applied, and natural differences in brush movement, drying and surface absorption are part of the finish. Approved samples establish the general color and style, but the completed wall will have its own natural variation.
