Quiet Luxury on the Wall

Subtle Texture, Soft Movement, Custom Color

Specialty finishes sit between paint and full plaster. Trowel-applied in thin layers, Roman clay and related decorative finishes give a wall gentle variation and a velvety, low-sheen surface that feels more considered than a painted color.

We tailor each finish to the room — calmer in bedrooms and living spaces, more pronounced on a fireplace or feature wall.

The Finishes

What Is Roman Clay?

Roman clay is a trowel-applied decorative finish with a fine, smooth texture. Applied in thin, overlapping passes, it builds soft clouds of tone and a matte-to-satin surface that can be lightly burnished for a gentle glow.

Alongside Roman clay we apply a range of specialty finishes, from polished Venetian plaster to metallic and textured treatments, so each surface gets the character that suits it.

Finishes We Apply

  • Roman clay
  • Venetian plaster
  • Mineral finishes
  • Metallic finishes
  • Textured accent walls
  • Custom decorative plaster
  • Smooth matte finishes
  • Fireplace and feature-wall applications

How We Work

Our Decorative Finish Process

  1. 01

    Design & Sampling

We discuss the room, lighting and look you want, then prepare samples of the finish and color.

    Technical Notes

Approved samples set the direction; the finished wall will have its own natural variation.

  2. 02

    Surface Preparation

Walls are protected, repaired and sanded smooth, then primed with the product the finish system requires.

    Technical Notes

Decorative finishes reveal imperfections, so we pay close attention to flatness before the first coat.

  3. 03

    Layered Application

The finish is trowelled on in thin passes, building color and movement layer by layer.

    Technical Notes

Coat count and drying time depend on the product and room conditions.

  4. 04

    Burnish, Protect & Inspect

Where specified, the surface is burnished or sealed, then inspected in natural and artificial light.

    Technical Notes

Some finishes benefit from a protective topcoat in high-touch areas. We'll recommend it where appropriate.

Making the Choice

Is a Specialty Finish Right for Your Space?

Decorative finishes suit clients who want walls with more character than paint and are comfortable with the natural variation of a hand-applied surface.

A specialty finish may be right if:

  • You want subtle texture and depth
  • You're designing a feature wall or fireplace
  • You want color that feels richer than paint
  • You value handcrafted surfaces

Paint may be a better fit if:

  • You want perfectly uniform color
  • You expect frequent patching
  • You need a scrubbable finish everywhere
  • Budget is the main priority

Questions

Roman Clay & Specialty Finish FAQs

What is the difference between Roman clay and Venetian plaster?

Both are trowel-applied, but Roman clay is typically softer and more matte, while Venetian plaster is built from finer, more compressed layers and can be polished to a higher sheen.

Is Roman clay the same as limewash?

No. Limewash is brushed on and creates color movement without added texture. Roman clay is trowelled and has a smoother, more tactile surface.

Can Roman clay go over painted drywall?

Yes, when the surface is sound, clean and properly primed. We repair and sand the wall first because decorative finishes reveal imperfections.

Can decorative finishes be used in bathrooms?

On bathroom walls outside direct water areas, yes, often with a protective topcoat. Inside showers we use microcement or plaster shower systems specified for wet areas.

How durable is Roman clay?

It is durable for normal wall use. In high-touch areas a protective topcoat may be recommended. We explain care expectations for your chosen finish.

Can specialty finishes be touched up?

Small touch-ups are possible but may be visible because the finish varies naturally. Sometimes refinishing a larger section blends better.View More Questions
Do you offer metallic finishes?
Yes. Metallic and pearlescent effects can be used for accent walls, ceilings and feature details.
