Review items may include

  • Drywall finishing consistency
  • Sanding marks
  • Joint visibility
  • Fastener imperfections
  • Corner-bead condition
  • Surface contamination
  • Gaps in trim and moldings
  • Nail holes
  • Wood-filler repairs
  • MDF edges
  • Previously applied primers
  • Moisture conditions

Systems Selected by Surface

Primers and Finishes for New Construction

01

New Drywall

A compatible drywall primer or surfacer is selected according to the specified finish and surface condition.

02

MDF and Wood Trim

Edges, joints, repairs and bare areas are prepared and primed with products appropriate for the material.

03

Stain Blocking

Specialty primers may be required for knots, tannins, water stains or other conditions.

04

Walls and Ceilings

Finish coatings are selected according to appearance, room use, washability and sheen.

05

Trim, Doors and Millwork

Durable enamel-type systems are used when appropriate. Spray application may be recommended for a smoother finish.

Primers, products and the number of coats are selected for each project's surfaces and specifications — not every project receives the same system.

  • Builder and project-manager communication
  • Finish schedules
  • Color and sheen documentation

  • Protection of completed surfaces
  • Change-order documentation
  • Punch-list scheduling

Delays caused by other trades may affect painting sequencing and completion dates.

Questions

New Construction Painting FAQs

When should a painter become involved in a new construction project?

Ideally during planning or before drywall is finished, so the painting scope, finish schedule and sequencing can be reviewed with the builder and other trades.

Do you work directly with builders and general contractors?

Yes. We work with homeowners, builders, designers and general contractors, and coordinate with the project manager on scheduling and finish selections.

Do you prime new drywall?

Yes. New drywall is primed with a compatible primer or surfacer selected for the specified finish and surface condition.

Do you provide Level 5 wall preparation?

Yes, when it is specified. Level 5 finishing, skim coating and extensive surface correction are included only when specified and priced in the written estimate.

Do you spray trim, doors and millwork?

On suitable projects. Spraying depends on the surface, site conditions and whether surrounding areas can be properly protected.

Can you paint while other trades are working?

Often, with coordination. We sequence preparation, priming, finish coats and touch-ups around other trades with the project team.View More Questions
