What Is a Microcement Shower?

Microcement is a thin, hand-applied cementitious decorative finish that creates a seamless, modern surface with natural movement and texture. In shower applications, microcement is installed over a properly prepared and waterproofed substrate to create a continuous decorative finish across walls, ceilings, niches, benches and other architectural surfaces.

Why Choose Microcement for a Shower?

Seamless Appearance

A continuous finish without the visual interruption of traditional grout lines.

Custom Texture & Movement

Each surface is hand-applied, creating natural variation and subtle movement.

Architectural Flexibility

Works well on properly prepared niches, benches, arches, curves, walls and ceilings.

Modern Mineral Aesthetic

A refined stone-like or cement-like appearance suited to contemporary and luxury bathrooms.

Coordinated Bathroom Surfaces

The finish can often continue to vanity walls, tub surrounds and other bathroom surfaces where appropriate.

A Beautiful Finish Starts With Proper Waterproofing

A microcement shower is a complete system, not simply a decorative coating applied over drywall. Proper substrate preparation, waterproofing, primers, reinforcement, finish coats and compatible sealers are critical to long-term performance. We work with professional systems such as Meoded Concretta FS.

Microcement is the visible decorative finish. Microcement is installed over a properly waterproofed shower assembly.

Can Microcement Be Installed Over Existing Tile?

In some cases, microcement can be installed over an existing tiled shower without removing every tile first. The tile must be securely bonded, stable and suitable for the selected system, and the surface must be evaluated and prepared. Not every existing tile shower is a candidate; we evaluate the substrate before recommending a system.

Transform an Existing Tile Shower With a Seamless Finish

When the existing shower assembly is structurally sound and properly waterproofed, some tiled surfaces may be suitable for a microcement renovation system after professional preparation.

  2. Surface Preparation
  3. Reinforcement Where Required
  4. Quartz / Bonding Primer

Shower walls, shower ceilings, niches, benches, arched and curved showers, steam shower surfaces where system-approved, tub surrounds, bathroom and vanity walls, powder rooms, wet rooms and feature walls.

Microcement vs. Traditional Tile

Microcement is seamless and hand-applied with minimal visible joints and suits curved surfaces. Tile offers individual patterns with visible grout lines and a wide variety of manufactured finishes. Neither is universally better.

Tadelakt Showers & Bathrooms

Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan lime plaster finish known for its smooth, organic appearance and softly polished surface. Unlike microcement, which is cementitious, Tadelakt is lime-based and is traditionally compressed and polished by hand using specialized tools and soap treatments. It suits shower walls, wet rooms, bathroom walls, tub surrounds, curved walls, niches, arches, powder rooms and spa-inspired bathrooms. Tadelakt is a water-repellent lime plaster finish, suitable for wet areas when installed over properly prepared substrates as part of an appropriate shower assembly.

Microcement vs. Tadelakt for Showers

Microcement is a cementitious decorative coating with a modern, mineral appearance, installed over a properly prepared waterproof substrate and protected with the appropriate sealer system. Tadelakt is a traditional lime plaster with a soft, polished, organic appearance, traditionally compressed, polished and treated with specialized soap. They are not interchangeable.

How Is a Tadelakt Finish Created?

Substrate evaluation, proper wet-area preparation, compatible primer or base preparation, lime plaster application, hand compression, stone polishing or burnishing, soap treatment and final detailing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microcement Showers

Is microcement waterproof?

Microcement is used as part of a complete shower finishing system. Proper substrate preparation, waterproofing, compatible primers, microcement layers and protective sealers are all important. The exact system depends on the product and shower construction.

Can microcement go over tile?

In some situations, microcement can be applied over properly prepared existing tile, but the tile must be securely bonded and the substrate must be evaluated first.

Can microcement be used on a shower ceiling?

Yes, when the substrate and finish system are appropriate for the application.

Can microcement be used in a steam shower?

Steam showers require additional consideration because of heat and vapor exposure. The selected waterproofing and decorative finish system must be approved for that environment.

Does microcement crack?

Proper substrate preparation, reinforcement, movement control and correct installation reduce the risk of cracking. Existing structural movement or substrate failure can affect any rigid finish.

How do you clean a microcement shower?

Use non-abrasive, manufacturer-compatible cleaners and avoid harsh chemicals or aggressive scrubbing tools that may damage the protective finish.

Can I choose the color of my microcement shower?

Yes. Color availability depends on the selected system, and physical samples are recommended before installation.

How much does a microcement shower cost in New Jersey?

Pricing depends on size, preparation, waterproofing requirements, niches, benches, ceilings, finish complexity and other project-specific conditions.

How long does microcement take to install?

Installation requires multiple stages including preparation, base coats, finish coats and sealing. Total project time depends on the shower design and product curing requirements.

Do you install microcement outside the shower?

Yes, depending on the project. Microcement may also be used on bathroom walls, vanity areas, tub surrounds and other decorative surfaces.
