Restore the Character

Bring Natural Wood Back to Life

Woodwork does not always need to be replaced when its color, sheen or protective finish begins to look worn. Professional refinishing can restore the natural grain, correct an outdated color and give architectural woodwork a renewed, durable appearance.

All Time Paint & Plaster Co. provides detailed wood staining, refinishing and restoration for staircases, handrails, doors, mantels, built-ins and custom millwork. Every project begins with an evaluation of the existing wood, previous coatings and the result you want to achieve.

Wood Surfaces

Woodwork We Stain and Refinish

Our focus is interior architectural woodwork — the stairs, doors and millwork that define a home's character.

  • Staircases, treads and handrails
  • Newel posts and wood balusters
  • Interior doors
  • Fireplace mantels
  • Built-ins and wood paneling
  • Trim, millwork and custom architectural woodwork

Stain or Paint

Should Your Woodwork Be Stained or Painted?

Stain & Clear Finish

  • Shows the natural wood grain
  • Suits quality hardwoods in good condition
  • Color can be custom-matched
  • Protected with a clear topcoat

Paint

  • Hides grain, patches and repairs
  • Suits softer or mismatched woods
  • Creates a uniform, solid color
  • Often paired with painted trim

We evaluate the wood species, condition and previous coatings before recommending stain or paint.

Why Refinish

What Professional Refinishing Protects

01

Original Woodwork

Refinishing can renew existing stairs, doors and millwork instead of replacing them.

02

Custom Stain Matching

Stain color is sampled on the actual wood so new and existing surfaces can be coordinated.

03

A Durable Finish

Proper preparation and a protective topcoat help the finish stand up to daily use.

How We Work

Our Wood Refinishing Process

  1. 01

    Evaluate

We review the wood, existing coatings and the color and sheen you want to achieve.

  2. 02

    Protect & Prepare

Surrounding surfaces are protected, then the wood is cleaned, stripped or sanded as the project requires.

  3. 03

    Stain & Sample

Stain colors are sampled on the wood for your approval before full application.

  4. 04

    Protective Finish

A clear protective finish is applied and the work is inspected with you.

Exterior Wood

Exterior Hardwood Restoration

As a secondary service, we also restore selected exterior hardwood surfaces.

  • Ipe decks
  • Mahogany decks
  • Cedar
  • Exterior wood doors
  • Other exterior hardwood surfaces

Good to Know

Before You Refinish

Wood Species

Different woods absorb stain differently, so the same stain can look different on oak, maple or pine.

Previous Coatings

Existing finishes affect how much stripping or sanding is needed before new stain can be applied.

Our Focus

We refinish architectural woodwork. We do not offer furniture, antique or floor refinishing.

Sample Selection

Choosing Your Stain Color

Stain color is best judged on your own wood, in your own light. We prepare samples so you can approve the color and sheen before the full project begins.

Estimates

What to Send for a Wood Refinishing Estimate

  • Photos of each wood surface
  • Which surfaces you want stained or refinished
  • The color or look you'd like
  • Any known previous finishes or damage
  • Your project location

Making the Choice

Is Refinishing Right for Your Woodwork?

Refinishing works best when the wood itself is sound.

Refinishing may be right if:

  • The wood is solid and structurally sound
  • You want to show or change the grain color
  • The finish is worn, faded or outdated

Consider paint if:

  • The wood is heavily patched or mismatched
  • You want a solid color
  • The surface is not a stain-grade wood

Questions

Wood Staining & Refinishing FAQs

Can you match an existing stain color?

We sample stain colors on the actual wood so you can compare them with existing surfaces and approve the color before full application.

Do you refinish staircases and handrails?

Yes. Staircases, handrails, newel posts and balusters are a core part of our wood refinishing work.

Can painted wood be stained?

Sometimes. It depends on the wood beneath and how much paint can be removed. We evaluate this on site.

Do you refinish floors or furniture?

No. We focus on architectural woodwork such as stairs, doors, mantels, built-ins and millwork.

Do you restore exterior decks?

Yes, as a secondary service we restore exterior hardwood such as Ipe, mahogany and cedar decks and exterior wood doors.

What areas do you serve?

We work throughout Wayne and Northern New Jersey, including Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Essex and Hudson counties.
