Real Ridgewood Projects

Limewash for Ridgewood's Classic Homes

Ridgewood is known for older colonials, Tudors and Victorians with formal dining rooms, plaster walls and original millwork. Limewash suits these homes because it reads as an old-world, handmade finish rather than a modern flat coat of paint.

In Ridgewood we've finished a sunlit dining room in limewash, and we've also completed Firenze lime plaster, a travertine-look plaster range hood and a plaster fireplace in town. The limewash dining room is the Ridgewood limewash project; the other photos show our related lime plaster work in Ridgewood homes.

What Is Limewash

A Natural Mineral Finish With Soft Movement

Limewash is a breathable mineral coating made from slaked lime and natural pigments. Brushed on in overlapping strokes, it dries to a chalky matte surface with gentle, cloud-like shifts in tone.

That softness flatters the proportions of a traditional Ridgewood dining room or parlor — it adds texture to plain walls without competing with crown molding, wainscoting or a period fireplace.

Why Ridgewood homeowners choose limewash

  • Old-world character that feels right in pre-war and period homes
  • Breathable mineral finish rather than a plastic paint film
  • Works beautifully above wainscoting and around original trim
  • Natural variation that changes softly with window light

Surfaces & Rooms

Where We Apply Limewash in Ridgewood

We apply the Meoded Lime Wash system — Meoded Lime Wash Base Coat followed by Meoded Lime Wash — on these surfaces. Limewash is not waterproof and is never used inside showers.

Interior Walls

Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, entries and stair halls finished in Meoded Lime Wash over the proper base-coat system.

Ceilings

Walls and ceilings carried in one finish for a soft, enveloping room — including tall and domed ceilings.

Kitchens

Kitchen walls and ceilings away from direct splash zones, with optional protection in busy areas.

Brick Fireplaces

Properly prepared brick and masonry fireplace surrounds, after we check for sealers or coatings that block bonding.

Brick Exteriors

Properly prepared exterior masonry and stucco, inspected first for moisture issues and previous coatings.

Our Process

How We Limewash a Ridgewood Home, Step by Step

  1. Step 1

    Preparation

We protect floors, furniture and trim, then inspect and repair cracks, dents, loose material and glossy areas.

  2. Step 2

    Primer

New drywall gets a PVA primer; glossy painted walls are sanded and primed with a suitable multipurpose primer.

  3. Step 3

    Meoded Lime Wash Base Coat

Two coats of base coat create the even absorption limewash needs to develop properly.

  4. Step 4

    Application Coats

Two hand-brushed coats of Meoded Lime Wash in cross-hatch strokes, keeping a wet edge. A third coat is optional for a softer look.

  5. Step 5

    Drying & Curing

At least eight hours between coats, then the lime continues to cure. We inspect the finished walls once fully dry.

An honest note: limewash looks much darker while wet and dries several shades lighter. We judge color only once each coat is dry, and we show you dried samples before we begin.

Cost Factors

What Affects the Cost of Limewash in Ridgewood

  • Total square footage of walls and ceilings
  • Surface condition and how much repair work is needed
  • Brick or masonry versus drywall or plaster
  • Ceiling height and whether scaffolding is required
  • Color changes, deep shades or a large shift from the current color
  • Number of coats and level of movement you want

Questions

Limewash FAQs for Ridgewood Homeowners

Is limewash a good fit for older Ridgewood homes?

Often, yes. Its soft, handmade look suits colonials, Tudors and Victorians. Older walls may have patches, cracks or old coatings, so we inspect and repair them before applying primer and base coat.

Can limewash go over existing painted walls?

Yes, after cleaning and preparation. Flat paint can take Meoded Lime Wash Base Coat directly; higher-sheen paint is sanded and primed with an appropriate multipurpose primer first.

Can limewash be applied to ceilings?

Yes. Carrying limewash onto the ceiling creates a soft, enveloping room. Ceilings show light raking across them, so prep and brush direction are planned carefully.

Can you limewash brick fireplaces or brick exteriors in Ridgewood?

Properly prepared masonry can be limewashed. We check the brick for sealers, paint or moisture issues first, because lime needs a clean, absorbent surface to bond.

What is the difference between limewash and lime plaster?

Limewash is a thin, brushed mineral coating that adds soft color movement. Lime plaster, like the Firenze finish in our Ridgewood dining room, is troweled on in layers and adds real texture and depth.

Why does limewash look darker when it goes on?

Limewash is noticeably darker while wet and dries several shades lighter as the lime cures. We judge color and movement only after each coat has dried, and we show you dried samples before work begins so there are no surprises.

Can limewash be touched up later?

Small touch-ups can remain visible because the finish naturally varies. Recoating a full wall section usually blends better than spot repairs.
