Limewash Coffee Shop Interior for Coffiyeh in Clifton, NJ
All Time Paint & Plaster Co. finished the interior of the Coffiyeh coffee shop in Clifton, New Jersey with hand-applied limewash — carrying the finish across the entry wall, the main feature wall, the lounge and the dining room walls and ceilings.
The scope also included staining all of the new wood counter, so the warm tone of the millwork sits comfortably alongside the soft mineral movement of the limewash. Raised plaster lettering on the entry and feature walls was finished under the limewash by hand, keeping the design crisp while the finish adds its natural depth.

A Mineral Finish for a Modern Coffee Shop
A coffee shop lives and dies by atmosphere. At Coffiyeh in Clifton, the design called for warmth and softness — a space that feels calm in the morning light and inviting in the evening — and limewash was the finish chosen to deliver it. Unlike flat paint, limewash is built up by hand in translucent layers, so every wall carries subtle tonal movement that shifts as the daylight and the shop's lighting change through the day.
The finish runs through the entire interior rather than stopping at a single accent wall: the entry wall that greets customers at the door, the large feature wall with its raised plaster lettering, the lounge seating area, and the dining room where the limewash carries across both the walls and the ceiling under the copper pendant lights.
Raised Plaster Lettering Under Limewash
Two of the shop's most important walls carry dimensional plaster lettering: the entry wall beside the storefront door, with the Coffiyeh name in both English and Arabic, and the main feature wall inside. Raised plaster detail is unforgiving — every edge and shadow shows — so the limewash was worked over the relief carefully by hand rather than rolled over it.
The result is lettering that still reads clearly from across the room, softened at the edges by the translucent finish. The limewash settles into the texture around the letters and breaks slightly over the raised faces, which is exactly the handcrafted quality that makes a limewash wall different from paint.
Preparing and Applying the Limewash
As with every limewash project, the work started with preparation: surfaces inspected and repaired where needed, the space protected, and base coats applied to give the limewash a consistent surface to bond to. Limewash rewards good preparation — the cleaner and more even the base, the more naturally the movement reads.
The limewash itself was applied by hand, worked in overlapping passes so the movement stays organic rather than repeating. Walls and ceilings were treated as continuous fields, with corners and transitions blended so the finish flows from one surface to the next without visible stopping points.
Staining the New Wood Counter
Alongside the limewash, our crew stained all of the new wood counter. Staining new millwork on site lets the tone be matched to the finished walls rather than chosen in advance from a sample, and here the counter was stained to sit comfortably within the warm mineral palette of the shop. Handling the wood staining and the decorative finishes in one scope also kept the colors coordinated and the schedule simple for the client.
Why Limewash Works Well in Cafés and Restaurants
- Soft, matte walls with natural movement that paint cannot replicate.
- A warm, mineral character that complements wood, stone and metal finishes.
- Works across walls and ceilings for one continuous surface.
- Enhances dimensional detail like raised plaster lettering and moldings.
- Every installation is unique — the movement is made by hand, on site.
- Suits the atmosphere-driven design of modern coffee shops and hospitality spaces.

Limewash Coffee Shop Questions
Can limewash be used in a coffee shop or restaurant?
Yes. Limewash is increasingly specified for cafés, restaurants and retail interiors because it gives walls and ceilings a soft, mineral depth that standard paint cannot match. On this project the full coffee shop interior — feature walls, entry wall, lounge and dining room walls and ceilings — was finished in hand-applied limewash.
How does limewash hold up in a busy commercial space?
Limewash creates a matte, breathable mineral finish with natural movement. Like any decorative finish, it should be maintained gently — dusting and spot-cleaning with mild products rather than aggressive scrubbing. High-touch or washable areas are discussed during the consultation so the right finish system is chosen for each surface.
Can limewash be applied over raised plaster lettering?
Yes. At Coffiyeh, both the entry wall and the main feature wall carry raised plaster lettering, and the limewash was worked over and around the relief by hand. The translucent quality of limewash actually enhances dimensional lettering, softening the edges while keeping the design crisp.
Can limewash be used on ceilings?
Yes. In the Coffiyeh dining room the limewash carries across the ceiling as well as the walls, so the whole room reads as one continuous mineral surface. Ceilings are a great place for limewash because the light movement it creates is visible across large, open planes.
Can you stain a new wood counter to match a limewash interior?
Yes. Alongside the limewash, our crew stained all of the new wood counter at Coffiyeh so its tone sits comfortably with the warm mineral palette of the walls and ceilings. Combining wood staining with decorative finish work in one scope keeps the colors coordinated and the schedule simple for the client.
