From Brick to Seamless Plaster

This Wayne fireplace began as an exposed brick surround. Instead of removing the existing masonry, we built a properly prepared plaster system over the brick to create a seamless architectural finish.

The Project

Transforming an Existing Brick Fireplace

The goal was to completely change the appearance of the existing brick fireplace without demolishing the masonry.

The original brick was thoroughly cleaned and wire brushed before the joints and irregular surfaces were filled and leveled.

Reinforcing mesh was incorporated into the preparation system for additional support before the fireplace was skim coated to create a consistent substrate for the decorative plaster.

Once preparation was complete, the surface was primed and finished with two hand-applied coats of Palladino plaster.

The result is a seamless fireplace with subtle natural movement that feels lighter, cleaner and more contemporary than the original brick.

Our Fireplace Plaster Process

Nine Steps From Masonry to Finish

1. 01

   Clean & Prep

   Existing brick was cleaned and wire brushed to remove loose material and prepare the masonry.

2. 02

   Fill

   Brick joints, gaps and irregularities were filled to begin creating a flatter substrate.

3. 03

   Reinforcement

   Reinforcing mesh was incorporated into the preparation system to provide additional support and help minimize cracking.

4. 04

   Skim Coat

   The fireplace was skim coated to create a smooth, consistent surface over the original masonry.

5. 05

   PVA Primer

   PVA primer was applied to seal and stabilize the prepared substrate.

6. 06

   Quartz Primer

   Quartz bonding primer was applied to create the proper mechanical bond for the decorative plaster.

7. 07

   Palladino Plaster

   Two hand-applied coats of Palladino plaster were installed to create the final decorative finish.

8. 08

   Firebox

   The interior brick was sprayed with a black high-temperature coating suitable for fireplace applications.

9. 09

   Protective Sealer

   Two coats of plaster sealer were applied to protect the completed Palladino finish.

The Finish

A Hand-Applied Palladino Finish

Palladino creates subtle movement and tonal variation that cannot be replicated with conventional paint. Each coat is applied and worked by hand, giving the fireplace a soft, natural character while maintaining a clean architectural appearance.

A Clean Contrast Inside the Firebox

The existing interior masonry was finished in a high-temperature black coating, creating a dramatic contrast against the light Palladino plaster and giving the fireplace a much cleaner finished appearance.
