Travertine-Inspired Meoded Palladino Fireplace in Bernardsville, NJ
All Time Paint & Plaster Co. created a custom travertine-inspired plaster fireplace in Bernardsville, New Jersey, using Meoded Marmorino Palladino combined with Meoded Z-4 Stone Additive.
The finish was built entirely by hand to carry the character of vein-cut travertine — horizontal movement, organic cavities, open pores and natural depth — while staying continuous across the fireplace the way only a lime-based plaster system can.

A Custom Travertine Plaster Fireplace in Bernardsville, NJ
The design objective for this Bernardsville fireplace was straightforward to describe and difficult to execute: the surround needed to look like vein-cut travertine, but it had to be one continuous surface rather than a set of slabs with joints running through it. Stone brings character to a room; it also brings seams, thickness at the edges and the compromises that come with fitting pieces around a firebox and a mantel.
Working the finish in plaster changed that. Meoded Marmorino Palladino, a lime-based decorative plaster, was applied directly to the prepared fireplace and shaped by hand, so the stone character lives in the material itself. The result belongs to the room — it turns corners, meets the mantel and wraps the firebox opening without a single joint interrupting the movement.
Preparing the Fireplace for a Seamless Decorative Finish
A decorative plaster finish is only ever as good as the substrate underneath it. On this project the great majority of the work happened before any Palladino was opened. The fireplace and the adjacent architectural surfaces were built over cementitious backer board and GoBoard, which gave us a sound base to work from but not yet a plaster-ready one.
Corner beads were installed on every exposed corner and architectural edge so the finished geometry would be true and hold up to daily life. Joints and transitions were reinforced with mesh. The fireplace surfaces were then skim coated, along with the adjacent architectural surfaces where the finish needed to continue, creating a smooth and continuous field across the whole assembly.
From there the surface was refined: corners, transitions and edges were worked until they were crisp and consistent. The firebox opening and the mantel were protected, and the floors and surrounding finished surfaces were masked off. Only once that substrate was stable, properly shaped and continuous did the fireplace move on to priming.
Creating the Foundation With Meoded Quartz Primer
With the skim coat complete and refined, Meoded Quartz Primer was applied across the fireplace. The primer establishes the correct foundation for the decorative plaster system, giving the Palladino a uniform surface to key into so the first coat behaves the same way on every face — flat fields, tight corners and the returns around the opening alike.
Applying Meoded Marmorino Palladino
The first coat of Meoded Marmorino Palladino was applied evenly across the primed fireplace. Its job is not to look like anything yet — it establishes a consistent plaster base with even coverage and uniform absorption, which is what allows the textured second coat to be worked freely without the finish reading differently from one area to the next.
Using Meoded Z-4 Stone Additive for a Travertine Effect
For the second coat, Meoded Z-4 Stone Additive was mixed into the Palladino. The additive is what gives the finish its stone character: as the coat is applied and worked, it helps create the irregular openings, pores and cavities that natural travertine has. That texture cannot be painted on afterwards — it has to be built into the material while the coat is going down.
Hand-Creating the Vein-Cut Travertine Look
While the second coat was still workable, the plaster was textured by hand. Vein-cut travertine reads horizontally — long, drifting bands of movement broken up by cavities and pores — so the material was worked in that direction, with the variation kept irregular rather than repeating.
This is the part of the process that cannot be standardised. Each pass builds organic variation and depth: some areas open up, others stay tighter, and the interplay between them is what convinces the eye it is looking at stone. It also means the fireplace is genuinely one of a kind, because the movement was created on the wall rather than selected from a slab.
Compressing and Refining the Finish
As the plaster began to set, the raised areas were compressed and refined with a stainless-steel trowel. Compressing the high points tightens and smooths the surface the hand touches, while the deeper openings and cavities were deliberately preserved. That contrast — a refined plane against open, textured recesses — is exactly how honed vein-cut travertine behaves, and it is the step that separates a stone-inspired finish from a rough textured wall.
Why Travertine-Inspired Plaster Works So Well on Fireplaces
Natural stone remains a beautiful choice, and for many projects it is the right one. A hand-applied travertine-inspired plaster is a different design route, with its own advantages on a fireplace:
- A seamless surface that carries around corners, returns and the firebox opening.
- Texture created for the specific wall, rather than chosen from available slabs.
- The visual weight and character of natural stone in a thin applied finish.
- Architectural presence for a fireplace that would otherwise be a flat plane.
- Colour, movement and depth adjustable to the room and its light.
- A one-of-a-kind result, because it is made by hand on site.
Other Applications for Palladino Travertine Finishes
The same Palladino and Z-4 system suits far more than fireplaces. It is often specified for feature walls and custom statement walls, kitchen range hoods, columns and piers, accent walls in entries and stairwells, architectural details such as niches and reveals, and full fireplace surrounds. Anywhere a room needs a stone presence without stone joinery, this finish is worth considering.

Travertine Plaster Fireplace Questions
What is a travertine plaster fireplace?
It is a fireplace finished in decorative plaster that has been worked to look like travertine stone. Instead of cutting and setting slabs, the finish is built up in coats over the fireplace itself and textured by hand, so the stone character is created in the plaster rather than assembled from pieces.
Can Venetian plaster be made to look like real travertine?
Yes. With the right material, additive and hand technique, a lime-based plaster can carry the horizontal movement, open pores and cavities associated with vein-cut travertine. The result is a stone-inspired surface — it is read as natural stone from across a room while remaining a continuous plaster finish.
What is Meoded Marmorino Palladino?
Meoded Marmorino Palladino is a lime-based decorative plaster from Meoded used for Venetian plaster and stone-look finishes. It is applied by hand in coats and can be textured and compressed while workable, which is what allows a finish like this one to be shaped rather than simply spread.
What does Meoded Z-4 Stone Additive do?
Z-4 is a stone additive mixed into the plaster. On this fireplace it was added to the second coat of Palladino, where it helped create the irregular openings, pores and cavities that give the surface the broken, porous character of natural travertine.
Can Palladino plaster be used on a fireplace?
It can, provided the substrate is prepared for it. On this project the fireplace was built out over cementitious backer board and GoBoard, then corner-beaded, mesh-reinforced, skim coated and refined before Quartz Primer and any decorative material were applied.
Does All Time Paint & Plaster install decorative plaster fireplaces in Bernardsville, NJ?
Yes. All Time Paint & Plaster Co. installs Venetian plaster, decorative plaster, limewash, microcement and custom fireplace finishes in Bernardsville, throughout Somerset County and across Northern New Jersey.
