Meoded Concretta Microcement Basement in Franklin Lakes, NJ

All Time Paint & Plaster Co. finished an entire walk-out basement in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey in Meoded Concretta microcement, colour Casper, applied by hand across both the walls and the ceilings.

The same finish runs through the hallway, kitchenette, office, entertainment room and the main basement areas, so the lower level reads as one continuous space rather than a set of separately decorated rooms.

A Seamless Microcement Basement in Franklin Lakes, NJ

This Franklin Lakes home has a walk-out lower level that functions as a floor of the house rather than storage below it — a hallway connecting a kitchenette, an office and an entertainment room, with the main basement area opening out to daylight. The brief was to treat all of it as one architectural volume, and microcement was the material that made that possible.

Instead of painting the drywall and letting each room take on its own character, we applied Meoded Concretta by hand over the walls and the ceilings of every connected space. Walking through the finished level, the surface never changes: the hallway leads into the kitchenette, the kitchenette into the entertainment room, and the material simply continues.

Why Microcement Works So Well in Large Interior Spaces

Large rooms expose the breaks in a finish. Panel joints, trim lines, changes in sheen and the transitions between wall and ceiling all announce themselves once a surface runs long enough. Microcement is applied in place as a continuous skin, so those interruptions largely disappear and the eye reads volume instead of pieces.

What replaces them is texture. The finish carries a quiet, close-grained movement that gives a broad wall something to look at without turning it into a feature. That restraint is what makes it work at this scale: it adds architectural character across an entire level while still letting furniture, millwork and light do their jobs.

It also means one finish can carry through multiple rooms. Rather than choosing a different treatment for the office than for the entertainment room, the design uses a single material and lets the contents of each space provide the contrast.

Using Meoded Concretta in Casper

The finish here is Meoded Concretta in the colour Casper — a soft, light neutral that reads slightly cool in daylight and warms up under the lower level's lighting. It is pale enough to keep a basement feeling open, and quiet enough that it never competes with what is placed against it.

Because the material is mixed on site and laid on by hand, the colour is not flat. There is subtle variation across the surface where the trowel worked, which is what separates a plaster finish from paint. In a modern interior that variation sits comfortably alongside natural wood, black metal accents, stone and glass — all of which appear throughout this basement.

Microcement on Both Walls and Ceilings

Most microcement work stops at an accent wall. This project is unusual because the finish was carried overhead as well, across the ceilings of every room on the level. That decision changes the result entirely.

With the same material on vertical and overhead surfaces, the corner where they meet stops functioning as a boundary. The room becomes an enclosure in one material — immersive rather than decorated. Ceilings are also the harder half of the job: working a hand-applied finish overhead across large spans, around lighting and into every perimeter takes considerably more time than the walls do.

Microcement in the Entertainment Room

The entertainment room is built around a large media wall and display. Those elements are dark, rectilinear and hard-edged, and against a flat painted wall they can feel heavy. The soft microcement texture wrapping the room gives them something to sit within — a quiet, matte field that absorbs light rather than bouncing it back at the screen.

Microcement in the Kitchenette

In the kitchenette the microcement ceiling and the surrounding wall surfaces frame warm wood cabinetry, stone counters and modern fixtures. The neutral Casper tone keeps the grain of the wood and the pattern of the stone as the things you notice, while the continuous ceiling ties the kitchenette back into the hallway and the rooms beyond it.

Microcement in the Office

The office pairs dark millwork and a fireplace with natural wood flooring and generous windows. A light, textured ceiling and walls lift the room against all that depth, spreading the available daylight rather than absorbing it, and giving the joinery a clean surface to terminate into.

Microcement Through the Hallway and Walk-Out Basement

Connecting spaces are usually where continuity breaks down. Here the hallway and the main walk-out basement areas received exactly the same treatment as the rooms they serve, so there is no moment of transition between a finished room and a plain corridor. Carrying the material through these in-between spaces is what makes the level feel designed as a whole.

A Hand-Applied Finish With Natural Movement

Every square foot of this basement was worked by hand. That means the surface is not perfectly uniform, and it is not meant to be — there is subtle movement, a shift in depth where one pass meets the next, and slight variation in how the light catches across a long wall.

That variation is the design. It is also the reason this kind of finish rewards experienced applicators: keeping movement consistent in character across walls and ceilings, room after room, is what makes a whole-floor installation read as one surface rather than a patchwork.

Microcement Basement Questions

What is microcement?

Microcement is a thin, cement-based decorative coating applied by hand in coats over a prepared substrate. Because it goes on as a continuous skin rather than in panels or sheets, it produces a seamless surface on walls, ceilings and other built forms.

Can microcement be applied to both walls and ceilings?

Yes. On this Franklin Lakes project the same Meoded Concretta finish was carried across both the walls and the ceilings of the basement, so the two surfaces read as one enclosure instead of two separately treated planes.

What is Meoded Concretta?

Meoded Concretta is a microcement plaster system used for seamless concrete-look decorative finishes. It is mixed on site and hand-applied in coats over a primed substrate, and it is available in a range of colours — this basement was finished in Casper.

Is microcement a good option for basements?

Microcement suits lower levels well because it is applied in place and can run across large uninterrupted wall and ceiling areas without joints or trim breaks. Whether it is right for a particular basement depends on the substrate and existing conditions, which we review on site before recommending a system.

Can microcement be used throughout multiple rooms?

Yes, and that is one of its strengths. Here a single finish runs through the hallway, kitchenette, office, entertainment room and main basement areas, which gives the whole lower level visual continuity instead of a series of individually finished rooms.

Does All Time Paint & Plaster install microcement in Franklin Lakes, NJ?
